The in-between move

The in-between move says: before I answer you, here is my threat. When it works, the whole position changes rhythm.

Explanation

The intermediate move breaks the expected rhythm.

This tactic works because the adversary relies on an automatic response. Before retaking a piece, always ask yourself if there is a check, a capture, or an even stronger threat.

Do not resume automatically.
Look first for checks and strong threats.
Changing the order of moves can change everything.

To remember

The intermediate blow says: before responding to your threat, I place an even more urgent blow.

Classic error

Automatically resume without looking at available checks, catches or threats.

Player Tip

Before any obvious recovery, ask yourself: do I have a failure or an even greater threat?
