Double attack

A double attack creates two threats with one move. Simple, clean, and very annoying to defend.

Explanation

The double attack creates two problems with one move.

You can attack a piece with your queen while threatening checkmate elsewhere, or play a move that attacks a rook and creates a threat on the king.

The principle is simple: the adversary can only respond to one threat at a time.

Threats must be concrete.
Very useful for gaining material.

To remember

A double attack creates two threats with a single move.

Classic error

Settle for one threat that's easy to parry when one blow can create two.

Player Tip

Good forcing moves often attack something while improving a piece.
