Chapter 02 · Beginner · 3 min

The rook

The rook loves straight lines. Give it an open file or rank and it suddenly feels like it owns the place.

Explanation

The rook likes straight lines and clear paths.

The rook moves horizontally or vertically, as many squares as it wants, as long as nothing blocks the path. It never jumps over a piece. If a friendly piece is in front of it, stop. If an opposing piece is on its line, it can capture it and stops on this square.

At the start of a game, rooks are often locked in the corners. They become really strong when files open, especially in the mid and late game. A rook on an open file is a bit like a car on the highway: finally space.

It plays on files and ranks.
She doesn't skip pieces.
It becomes strong on open lines.

To remember

The rook moves in a straight line across files and ranks, without jumping over pieces.

Classic error

Leaving her locked behind her own pieces for too long.

Player Tip

When a file opens, remember to place a rook there. She loves highways.
