Chapter 02 · Beginner · 3 min
The knight
The knight moves in an L and jumps over pieces. It is weird at first, then it becomes everyone’s favorite trick maker.
Explanation
The knight is the piece that doesn't think in straight lines.
The knight moves in an L shape: two squares in one direction, then one square to the side. It can also be one square then two, depending on how you view it. The most important: he jumps over pieces, friendly or opposing.
This ability makes him very troublesome. He can attack a queen behind a wall of pawns, make forks, and appear in squares that are easily forgotten. In the center, he can control up to eight squares. On the edge, he has much less choice.
To remember
The knight moves in an L shape and can jump over pieces.
Classic error
Only look at nearby squares. The knight often attacks squares that cannot be seen at first glance.
Player Tip
A knight in the center can attack up to 8 squares. On the edge, he becomes much more shy.
