Pawn promotion

A pawn reaching the end can become a queen, rook, bishop or knight. The queen is common, but a knight can sometimes steal the show.

Explanation

A pawn that reaches the end can change profession.

When a White pawn reaches the 8th rank, or a black pawn reaches the 1st rank, it must be promoted. He can become a queen, a rook, a bishop or a knight. He cannot become king, even if he gained confidence during the journey.

Most of the time, we choose a queen because it is the strongest piece. But sometimes a knight is better if he gives checkmate, or if he avoids a stalemate. It's rare, but very satisfying when it happens.

Mandatory promotion at the end of the board.
Queen, rook, bishop or knight.
The queen is the most common choice.

To remember

A pawn that reaches the last rank can become a queen, rook, bishop or knight.

Classic error

Believing that he must become a queen. The queen is often better, but not always.

Player Tip

Look at the possible checkmates and checkmates: sometimes, promoting to knight is the smart move.
