Avoid moving the same piece twice

In the opening, avoid moving the same piece again and again. Every move is a chance to bring someone new into the game.

Explanation

In the opening, every useful move counts.

Moving the same piece several times for no reason wastes time. While you walk a knight around as if looking for his parking spot, the opponent can develop multiple pieces.

There are of course exceptions: if a piece is attacked, if it gains material, or if it creates a strong threat, it can move again. But by default, try to bring a new piece into the game.

A blow must serve development.
Only move a piece with a good reason.
Each lost move gives comfort to the opponent.

To remember

In the opening, each move should ideally bring a new piece into play.

Classic error

Riding the same knight three times with no real threat.

Player Tip

There are exceptions, of course. But if you move a piece, ask yourself what you're really gaining.
