Keep the king safe

Castling early prevents many small disasters. A king in the center for too long is basically a public invitation.

Explanation

A calm king allows the other pieces to work.

Castling early is often a good idea, especially when the center can open up. A king left in the middle of the board becomes a target for rooks, bishops and the opposing queen.

Keeping the king safe does not mean playing without ambition. On the contrary: once your king is protected, your pieces can attack more freely. It's easier to build an attack when the house isn't burning behind you.

Castle when possible and useful.
Avoid opening the center with an uncastled king.
Keep a few defenders around the king.

To remember

A secure king gives more freedom to the other pieces.

Classic error

Leave the king in the center as the lines begin to open.

Player Tip

Castling isn't just defensive: it also connects your rooks later.
