Chapter 05 · Beginner+ · 5 min

Develop pieces quickly

Development means bringing pieces into the game. A piece stuck at home is not helping, even if it looks comfortable.

Explanation

Developing is getting your pieces into the game.

At first, your knights, bishops, rooks and queens don't do much. Developing them means placing them on useful squares, where they control the center, protect the king or create threats.

Beginners often play too many pawn moves. Pawns are useful, but if only your small troops advance while the pieces remain in bed, the opposing attack can arrive very quickly.

Get out knights and bishops early.
Look for active squarees.
Avoid playing only pawns.

To remember

Developing means taking your pieces out so that they really participate.

Classic error

Play a lot of pawn moves while the pieces remain stuck.

Player Tip

Come out quickly, knights and bishops. They can't help from home.
