Connect the rooks

Once the minor pieces are out and the king has castled, the rooks can finally see each other. Connected rooks work much better.

Explanation

Connecting the rooks means freeing the first rank.

Rooks are connected when no pieces are between them. To achieve this, it is often necessary to develop the knights and bishops, castle, then move the queen if necessary.

Two connected rooks defend each other and can double up on an open file. They then become much stronger. A single rook can be active; two coordinated rooks can really put the pressure on.

Expand the pieces between rounds.
Castle to get the king out of the way.
Then look for an open file.

To remember

Rooks are connected when no pieces separate them on the first rank.

Classic error

Forget the tricks after castling. They must also enter the game.

Player Tip

Once the king is safe and the pieces are developed, look for a good file for your rooks.
