Control the center

The center is the busy crossroads of the board. Control it and your pieces breathe better.

Explanation

The center gives space to your pieces.

Squares e4, d4, e5 and d5 are the most important central squares. A piece placed or active towards the center often controls more squares than a piece stuck on the edge.

Controlling the center does not always mean putting a pawn on it. You can also attack him with pieces. The idea is simple: if your pieces look at the center, they participate in the game instead of looking at the scenery.

The center gives more mobility.
Pawns can occupy the center.
Pieces can also control it remotely.

To remember

The center is mainly the squares e4, d4, e5 and d5. Controlling them gives space.

Classic error

Play only on the edges while the opponent takes all the center.

Player Tip

If you don't know what to do in the opening, ask yourself how to influence the center.
