Intro to the Ruy Lopez

The Ruy Lopez puts steady pressure on the center. It teaches building a position, not just hunting for fireworks.

Explanation

The Spaniard builds lasting pressure.

After 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6, the White bishop often goes to b5: 3.Bb5. This opening is also called the Ruy López. The bishop attacks the knight who defends the pawn e5. The idea is not necessarily to win this pawn straight away, but to apply annoying pressure.

The Spaniard learns patience. We develop, we castle, we strengthen the center, then we choose the right moment to act. It's less spectacular than a quick trap, but much more solid.

Pressure on jumper c6.
Calm development.
Very good construction school.

To remember

The Spaniard puts pressure on the c6 knight and therefore on the e5 pawn.

Classic error

Believe that the bishop on b5 immediately wins the pawn e5.

Player Tip

It's a slow pressure opening. She learns patience and construction.
