Intro to the Queen's Gambit

The Queen’s Gambit offers a pawn to gain space and control. Stylish name, very practical idea.

Explanation

The Queen's Gambit offers a pawn to win the center.

After d4 and d5, White often plays c4. They offer a side pawn to attract the black pawn and get more space in the center. It's not a crazy sacrifice: White often gets the pawn back later.

This opening teaches an important idea: not all pawns are equal depending on position. Temporarily giving away a pawn can be great if your pieces become more active and the center is yours.

Pressure on the center.
Pawn temporarily offered.
Solid, positional play.

To remember

The Queen Gambit offers the c-pawn to gain more control in the center.

Classic error

Thinking it's just a free sacrifice.

Player Tip

If the opponent takes, try to recover the pawn with a better center.
