Chapter 09 · Intermediate · 5 min

Promoting an isolated pawn

A passed pawn has no enemy pawn in front of it. Its message is simple: let me advance and I may become a queen.

Explanation

A passed pawn no longer has an opposing pawn to stop it in front of it.

If there are no enemy pawns on his file or neighboring files capable of blocking or capturing him, the pawn passes. He becomes a real threat, because he can advance towards promotion.

A passed pawn must be supported. The king, a rook or another piece can help him advance. A pawn passed alone can be dangerous; a pawn passed well escorted begins to smell the new queen.

No opposing pawns in front of or on neighboring files.
He threatens promotion.
He gets stronger with support.

Classic error

Pushing too fast without support from the king.

Player Tip

A passing pawn is a promise. The king and the pieces must help him hold it.
