The king in the endgame

In the endgame, the king stops hiding and becomes active. Just remember: active does not mean invincible.

Explanation

In the finale, the king comes out of hiding.

When there are few pieces left, the king is less likely to be defeated. He can therefore become active: attack pawns, support his own, block the opposing king and control important squares.

Many endgames are won with a more active king. If your king stays away from the action while the other advances, you risk playing with one fewer piece. The king must also get his hands dirty.

The king becomes an active piece.
He supports the pawns.
He controls the key squarees.

To remember

In the endgame, the king becomes an active piece. He can attack, block and support pawns.

Classic error

Leaving the king away from the action out of habit.
