Manage your time

Time management does not mean moving fast forever. It means knowing when to think and when the natural move is enough.

Explanation

Managing your time doesn't mean playing fast all the time.

You have to know when to think. A tactical position, an exposed king or a critical endgame deserves time. On the other hand, taking an obvious piece or playing a known opening move should not clear the clock.

Beginners often make two opposite mistakes: playing important moves instantly, then thinking too long on simple moves. Try to save time for the moments when the game can really change.

Think more in critical positions.
Play obvious moves faster.
Leave time for the finale.

To remember

Managing your time means knowing when to think and when to play a natural move.

Classic error

Spending two minutes on an obvious move, then playing the finale in a panic.

Player Tip

Keep time for critical moments: tactics, king in danger, pawn endgame.
