Chapter 10 · All levels · 3 min
Which move should I play?
Use four steps: check threats, look for forcing moves, improve your worst piece, then choose. Not magic, just fewer blunders.
Explanation
Choosing a move becomes easier with a method.
A good routine: first the opposing threats, then your checks, captures and threats, then the improvement of your worst piece, and finally the choice of move. This method doesn't always find the perfect move, but it saves a lot of nonsense.
Don't try to play brilliantly every time. In chess, a solid move that solves a problem is often better than a spectacular move that forgets a piece. The style is good. Keeping your queen is not bad too.
To remember
Good method: opposing threats, checks/captures/threats, worst piece to improve, then choice.
Classic error
Looking for the perfect move and forgetting to check a simple threat.
Player Tip
A good move doesn't have to be brilliant. Above all, he must resolve the positional problems.
