The 3 ways to escape check

There are three exits: move the king, capture the attacker, or block the line. Sometimes only one door is open.

Explanation

There are three families of responses to failure.

The first solution is to move the king to a safe square. The second is to capture the attacking piece. The third is to block the line of attack, but only against rooks, bishops and queens. We don't block a knight attack, because this smart guy jumps the lines.

When you fail, make a habit of checking these three options in order. Don't panic. Look for the safe squares, see if the attacker can be caught, then ask yourself if a piece can fit in between.

Move the king.
Capture the attacker.
Block the attack line when possible.

To remember

There are three families of defense: move the king, capture the attacking piece, or block the attack.

Classic error

Believing that you always have to move the king. Sometimes capturing or blocking is much better.

Player Tip

List the three options before playing. Even a second of method can save a game.
