Chapter 03 · Beginner · 3 min
Main draw rules
A game can be drawn by repetition, the 50-move rule, agreement, stalemate or insufficient material. Chess has its own way of saying: nobody gets through.
Explanation
A draw means that neither player wins.
A draw can happen in several ways: stalemate, triple repetition of the same position, 50 moves by each player without taking or moving a pawn, agreement between the players, or insufficient material to mate. It's a lot, but you don't need to master everything on your first day.
The most useful thing at the beginning is to understand the pat and the insufficient material. King against king, for example, cannot give checkmate. Even with a lot of motivation and a very intense gaze, two kings alone aren't going anywhere.
To remember
A draw can come from stalemate, triple repetition, 50 moves from each player, an agreement or insufficient material.
Classic error
Continuing to look for an impossible mate with too little material.
Player Tip
Knowing draws prevents panicking in positions where no one can really win.
