Welcome to chess

Chess is not about eating every piece. The real job is to trap the enemy king. We will build that calmly, one useful idea at a time.

Explanation

Chess is a game of territory, threats and a king to protect.

At first, many players think that you just have to take as many pieces as possible. It's tempting, because capturing a queen is always a pleasure. But the real objective is more precise: to place the opposing king in a situation where he is attacked and can no longer escape.

A game is therefore won with moves that create useful threats. Sometimes we gain material, sometimes we improve a piece, sometimes we prepare an attack. The important idea is that each move must serve a small plan. Even a simple plan is better than a move made just because it looks pretty.

The king is not captured: checkmate proves there is no legal escape.
Winning material helps, but it's not the end goal.
A good move improves your position or creates a real threat.

Example: if you win a rook but let your king get checkmated right after, the rook won't give you much comfort.

To remember

The goal of chess is not to take all the pieces. The goal is to put the opposing king in checkmate.

Classic error

Only seek to eat material and forget about the safety of the king.

Player Tip

At the beginning, ask yourself often: is my king safe, and am I threatening anything?
