Files, ranks and diagonals

Files, ranks and diagonals are the roads of the board. Once you see those roads, the pieces make much more sense.

Explanation

Files, ranks and diagonals are the routes that the pieces take.

A file rises vertically from your side towards the opposing camp. A rank crosses the board horizontally. A diagonal goes at an angle, always on squares of the same color. It sounds very geometry, but we promise, we stay far from surprise control.

Understanding these three lines helps enormously. The rook uses files and ranks. The bishop uses the diagonals. The queen uses all three. When looking at a position, look first for these open routes: they often show which pieces are active.

File: vertical.
Rank: horizontal.
Diagonal: at an angle, always on the same color.

To remember

Files rise from bottom to top, ranks go from left to right, diagonals cross at an angle.

Classic error

Confusing file and rank, especially when you start reading the moves.

Player Tip

Imagine the board as a city: files, horizontal streets, then diagonal roads.
