Notation from a1 to h8

Every square has an address, from a1 to h8. It lets players talk about moves without pointing at the screen like detectives.

Explanation

The notation gives an address to each square.

The letters a to h name the files. The numbers 1 to 8 name the ranks. A square is always read with the letter first, then the number: e4, c6, h1. It's like saying street then number, but with less paperwork.

This notation quickly becomes practical. It allows you to follow a game, redo an exercise, understand an explanation and clearly say where a piece is. When someone says 'knight on f3', you know exactly where to look.

We write e4, not 4e.
White has rank 1 on his side.
Black has rank 8 on his side.

To remember

A square is always read with the letter first, then the number: e4, c6, h1.

Classic error

Say 4e instead of e4. We understand sometimes, but that's not chess notation.

Player Tip

Find the file with the letter, then go up to the correct number. Simple and reliable.
