Chapter 01 · Complete beginner · 3 min
The chessboard
The board has 64 squares, but you do not need to memorize them all today. Start with the simple rule: light square on your bottom right.
Explanation
The board looks simpler when it is in the right direction.
A chessboard contains 64 squares: 32 light and 32 dark. The basic rule to remember is very simple: when you are on the White side, the square at the bottom right must be clear. If it's dark, the board is turned, and everything else becomes weird.
This orientation is mainly used to correctly place the pieces and read the coordinates. White always starts at the bottom in classic diagrams, black at the top. Once this cue is established, you can concentrate on the game instead of wondering why the queen looks lost.
To remember
A well-placed chessboard always has a clear square at the bottom right.
Classic error
Turn the board the wrong way. Afterwards, all the coordinates become confused.
Player Tip
Before each game or exercise, just check the bottom right corner. It's quick and avoids mess.
