Ladder mate

The ladder mate teaches coordination between heavy pieces. One covers, the other advances. Neat and oddly satisfying.

Explanation

The ladder mate teaches coordination.

With two heavy pieces, often two rooks or a rook and a queen, we advance as if on steps. One piece controls one line, the other takes the next line. The opposing king is forced to retreat.

This mat is excellent for understanding the concept of cut lines. You don't pursue the king randomly: you take away space from him. It's quiet, clean, and honestly quite satisfying.

A piece cuts a line.
The other advances on the next line.
The king ends up stuck at the edge.

To remember

The ladder mate coordinates two heavy pieces to push the king to the edge.

Classic error

Advance one piece without protecting the other.

Player Tip

Really imagine a staircase: the pieces go up one after the other.
