Chapter 07 · Early intermediate · 5 min
King + rook vs king
King and rook mate takes patience. The rook cuts space, the king helps, and the enemy king is pushed to the edge.
Explanation
King and rook against king requires a little more method.
The rook cuts a rank or file, like a barrier. Your king comes to help to prevent the opposing king from returning. Little by little, you reduce the space until you push the king to the edge of the board.
The secret is not to give checks to chance. If the rook attacks too early without support, the opposing king escapes. You have to work with both pieces: the rook cuts, the king accompanies.
To remember
The rook cuts the opposing king, your king comes to help, then we push towards the edge.
Classic error
Try to checkmate alone with the rook, without bringing the king closer.
Player Tip
Think 'cut, bring together, push'. It's easier than chasing the king.
